Besides,<br \/>\nthey wouldn&#8217;t have thought a pan-Hellenic expedition<br \/>\nwithout a Spartan king in command<br \/>\nwas to be taken very seriously.<br \/>\nOf course, then, &#8220;except the Lacedaimonians.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s certainly one point of view. Quite understandable.<\/p>\n<p>So, &#8220;except the Lacedaimonians&#8221; at Granikos,<br \/>\nthen at Issus, then in the decisive battle<br \/>\nwhere the terrible army<br \/>\nthe Persians mustered at Arbela was wiped out:<br \/>\nit set out for victory from Arbela, and was wiped out.<\/p>\n<p>And from this marvellous pan-Hellenic expedition,<br \/>\ntriumphant, brilliant in every way,<br \/>\ncelebrated on all sides, glorified<br \/>\nincomparable, we emerged:<br \/>\n<strong>the great new Hellenic world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We the Alexandrians, the Antiochians,<br \/>\nthe Selefkians, and the countless<br \/>\nother Greeks of Egypt and Syria,<br \/>\nand those in Media, and Persia, and all the rest:<br \/>\nwith our far-flung supremacy,<br \/>\nour flexible policy of judicious integration,<br \/>\nand our Common Greek Language<br \/>\nwhich we carried as far as Bactria, as far as the Indians.<\/p>\n<p>How can one talk about Lacedaimonians now!<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\n<\/em><em>Constantine P.
